The love for rum runs deep in the Caribbean, and Sint Maarten/Saint Martin is no exception. The island’s warm climate, rich soil, and abundant tropical fruits and spices make it the perfect place to craft exceptional rums – or “rhum” as it is often spelled.

Here, you will find everything from smooth, aged varieties to playful infusions inspired by local ingredients. And, for those looking to dive deeper, there are plenty of Saint Martin rum distillery tours and tastings where you can sample unique creations while learning the art and science behind them. These are the Caribbeanly team's favorite spots...

St Martin Guavaberry Rum: The Island’s Signature Sip

No visit to Saint Martin is complete without trying Guavaberry Rum. This beloved island liqueur dates back to the 18th century and is made from wild guavaberries, a rare fruit that grows in the island’s hills.

We recommend you visit the Sint Maarten Guavaberry Emporium in Philipsburg for an authentic sip. Housed in a vibrant historic building, the emporium offers tastings of the original Guavaberry Rum alongside exotic flavors like mango and passionfruit. Update: the Guavaberry location has been closed since Covid-19.

If you visit during the holiday season, ask about the homemade "Christmas Rum." Many island families make their own batches during this festive time.

Must-Visit Saint Martin Rum Distilleries & Tours

Topper’s Rhum (Sint Maarten)

Topper’s Rhum is known for its inventive approach to Caribbean rum. This family-owned distillery creates a wide range of flavored rums, from classic spiced varieties to unique blends like Banana Vanilla Cinnamon.

Taking a guided tour through the distillery is one of the best things to do in Sint Maarten. Here, you’ll get to learn about the rum-making process and even bottle your own personalized creation.

Locals love Topper’s not just for the rum, but also for the dining experience at Topper’s Restaurant. If you stop by, be sure to try the rum-infused desserts. The rum cake, soaked in their signature blend, is a fan favorite.

Pelikaan Brewery & Distillery (Sint Maarten)

For those seeking a boutique experience, Pelikaan Brewery & Distillery delivers small-batch charm. This artisan distillery specializes in handcrafted rums made using traditional techniques. Tours here are intimate and informative, offering an up-close look at the production process.

One of the highlights is the chance to sample exclusive experimental rums. If you ask the right questions, you might even get a taste of their "Secret Barrel" releases. These limited-edition rums are aged in specialty barrels and are only available to those in the know.

Guavaberry Colombier Tradition (Saint Martin)

On the French side of the island, Guavaberry Colombier Tradition is a must-visit for those interested in heritage and authenticity. This family-run operation continues the art of making guavaberry rum using recipes passed down through generations.

Searching for a rare find? Ask about their "Reserve Batch." This aged guavaberry rum is produced in tiny quantities and is only available directly from the distillery. It makes for a truly unique souvenir to bring home.

This St Martin distillery tour feels more like a personal visit with family, complete with tales of the island’s history and culture. Make a reservation at the distillery by calling + 590 690 22 77 17.

Rhum Gouverneur 1648 (Saint Martin)

Rhum Gouverneur 1648 combines old-world craftsmanship with Caribbean flair. This distillery focuses on refined, barrel-aged rums that highlight the island’s French influence. Their guided tastings include premium rums paired with local chocolates – a luxurious sensory experience.

If you’re serious about rum, inquire about the private cellar tour. This exclusive offering allows guests to sample vintage reserves and provides a behind-the-scenes look at the aging process. It’s a brilliant thing to do in Saint Martin for anyone looking to savor the island’s more sophisticated side.

How to Plan Your Rum Tour Adventure

The best time to explore Saint Martin’s rum scene is during the island’s festivals. November is our favorite time: the St. Martin Gourmet Festival spotlights local flavors, including some of the island’s best craft rums. However, Carnival, held from April to May, also brings lively parades and special tastings.

Booking tours in advance is a smart move, especially for popular spots like Topper’s and Rhum Gouverneur 1648. Private rum tours are also available and often include exclusive experiences and behind-the-scenes access. To navigate the island, consider renting a car for flexibility, or join a guided rum tour that whisks you around.

Rum Souvenirs & Where to Buy Them

We think rum is one of the best Saint Martin souvenirs. Visit The Caribbean Liquors & Tobacco shop in Philipsburg to bring home a taste of the island. This store carries an impressive selection, including rare local-only bottles. For something more artisanal, head to the Marigot Market on the French side, where local vendors sell homemade infused rums.

When packing rum for your return, secure the bottles in bubble wrap and check them in your luggage. Most airlines allow you to bring alcohol in your checked bags as long as it meets the volume limits.

Savor the Spirit of Sint Maarten/Saint Martin

Whether you prefer a bold, aged rum or a fruity guavaberry liqueur, both Sint Maarten and Saint Martin have plenty of options. And, beyond the official distilleries, locals often craft their own "bush rum," infusing homemade spirits with herbs, spices, and fruits. If you are lucky, you might find a friendly local willing to share a taste of these small-batch treasures.

When in bars, order a Ti’ Punch to sip like a local. This classic French Caribbean cocktail combines white rum, lime, and a splash of cane syrup. It is simple, refreshing, and a perfect way to toast your island adventure.
